Melbourne Stars coach Stephen Fleming says that his all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is frustrated that he’s been denied the opportunity to state a case for Test selection.

Fleming joined Dead Set Legends Melbourne today and told Jay Clark and Leigh Montagna that circumstances have prevented Maxwell from being able to show off his long-form skills.

“I think he’s disappointed just around opportunity,” Fleming said.

“You can never control if you’re gonna get selected, but the whole denying him an opportunity through that Pakistan or India A series I think it was was a little bit baffling.

“Then for him to miss out without really firing a shot… he’s had some ups and downs around selection.”

Maxwell was left out of the Australia A tour to India in August and was subsequently not picked for the Test series in the UAE against Pakistan.

Now he’s representing Australia in the T20I series over there rather than playing First Class cricket for Victoria, leaving him unable to try and make the weight of Sheffield Shield runs deemed necessary for him to break back into the Test setup.

Maxwell averages 41.07 at First Class level, with seven tons and 20 fifties from 100 innings.

Fleming also discussed the Stars’ upcoming Big Bash season, their new Nepalese legspinner and more.
