Former Australian Test captain Michael Clarke has backed Matthew Wade to don the gloves for Australia in the opening Ashes Test Match.

Clarke told Sports Sunday, Wade deserves the opportunity to start the opening match in Brisbane.

"You've got to sick with Matthew Wade," Clarke said.

"His last nine or ten Test matches have been in the sub continent.

"Yes he mightn't have batted as well as we expect him to bat but this guy can play.

"I've seen him make two unbelievable Test hundreds. One in the West Indies and one at the SCG.

"His keeping has definitely improved. They have to give him an opportunity. They've got to start with him."
