England captain Joe Root hasn’t had a great Ashes series.

His decision to bowl first after winning the toss at Adelaide was widely lampooned after the Aussies cruised to 8/442, and he hasn’t set the world on fire with the bat either.

He’s crossed 50 twice — 51 in Brisbane and 67 in Adelaide, both in the second innings — but hasn’t been able to go on to make tons.

In fact, his entire output in the series so far has already been eclipsed by much maligned Aussie all-rounder Mitch Marsh.

Root has made 162 runs in his five knocks so far this series, at an average of 32.40

Meanwhile Marsh has made his maiden Test ton today and made the most of it, moving on to 181 not out with more to come.

Marsh’s huge ton and Steve Smith’s double century have put the Aussies in the box seat at the WACA; they are 4/549 at stumps on day 3 in answer to England’s 403.

Smith is unbeaten with Marsh on 229*.
