Australia will be without their bowling attack leader Mitch Starc for the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.

Starc had been in doubt due to a bruised heel and was ruled out by the Aussie camp today.

The big left-armer has been a wrecking ball for the Aussies in the first three Tests, taking 19 wickets at an average of 21.05.

He injured his heel midway through the WACA Test, where the Aussies won by an innings and 41 runs to seal a the return of the Ashes.

With the series wrapped up, Australia opted not to risk their spearhead.

He will be replaced in the XI by Tasmanian seamer Jackson Bird, who hasn’t played a Test for Australia since the corresponding fixture at the MCG last year.

Bird leads all comers for wickets in the Sheffield Shield, with 25 under his belt at an average of 16.56.
