Mitch Starc has put the Aussies on top in the first Test against South Africa in Durban overnight with a searing five wicket haul.

Australia got to 351 from their batting innings thanks largely to Mitch Marsh’s brilliant 96, with Steve Smith contributing 56 as well.

The Aussies then bundled the Proteas out for just 162, thanks largely to Starc’s stunning late spell.

He ripped out 3/2 from his last seven balls of the innings on his way to 5/34 from 10.4 overs.

Nathan Lyon was also on top form, taking the first two wickets of the innings in the 8th over, before returning to bowl the dangerous Quinton de Kock.

South Africa lost 4/4 from 14 balls at the end of the innings amongst an overall collapse of 7/70.

The Aussies are in a strong position with three days to play of the first match of the four Test series.
