The Cricket Australia pay deal has taken another turn, with Mitchell Starc signing a deal with a rival sponsor of Cricket Australia.

Fairfax Media confirmed on Sunday Starc has signed a one-year deal with an Audi dealership.

The deal is one Cricket Australia may not be thrilled with, who have Toyota, a rival dealer, among its so-called protected sponsors for the upcoming cricket season.

Normally when a player is under contract, CA must agree on any sponsorships or partnerships for the player to take them on.

It is a message from Starc that he is serious about fighting the pay deal that has left him and his teammates technically unemployed.

CA team performance boss Pat Howard has warned against players signing deals with rival sponsors.

"All players will be provided with a list of protected sponsors for 2017/18," he wrote in an email last month that was forwarded to players.

"Any player entering into unapproved endorsements during any uncontracted period puts at risk future endorsement arrangements with CA, State and W/BBL partners and puts you at risk of not being able to enter into a contract for the upcoming season with CA, the State or W/BBL Team."
