Australian spearhead Mitchell Starc says he found out he was out of a million-dollar Indian Premier League contract - via text message.

The 28-year-old was one of the most expensive players in the competition when the Kolkata Knight Riders snapped him up last year for around $1.5 million.

He's now been released from that deal, costing him a handy pay packet.

How did he found out? A text.

"I got a text message two days ago from the owners of Kolkata saying I've been released from my contract," he said.

"At the moment I'll be home in April."

Starc isn't fussed, giving him the chance to freshen up for a World Cup campaign as well as an Ashes defence.

"If I don't play the IPL next year it's a good opportunity to freshen up for a massive six months of cricket in the UK," he added.

"At the moment for me I just want to play as much Test and one-day cricket for Australia as I can.

"The IPL is a lovely bonus on the pay packet but if I miss that to play more Test matches, I'm taking that option."
