Not good signs

None of the wicketkeepers hoping for a Test call up managed to make runs in this round of the Sheffield Shield.

The keepers spot has been the subject of much speculation, with incumbent Matthew Wade struggling with the bat — since returning to the Test team last November, he has averaged 20.23.

He did himself no favours with his output in Tasmania’s game against WA, recording just 1 and 6 in the two innings.

However, no other keeper put much pressure on him for his spot, with main rival Peter Nevill struggling as well.

Wicketkeeper scores for this Sheffield Shield round:

Matthew Wade (Tas) — 1 & 6
Peter Nevill (NSW) — 20
Alex Carey (SA) — 12 & 4
Josh Inglis (WA) — 0 & 16
Sam Harper (Vic) — 0 & 9
Jimmy Peirson (Qld) — 16 & 9

Players that can take the gloves but didn't this round:

Cameron Bancroft (WA) — 18 & 17
Pete Handscomb (Vic) — 9 & 34

So of all the main keepers, Nevill’s 20 was the highest score.

Not great signs for the Ashes.
