It’s not exactly a secret that the Poms are struggling with the bat in this Ashes.

They haven’t been able to get enough out of their dedicated batsmen, with Alastair Cook in particularly bad nick.

The lower order has also struggled to contribute, with players like Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes not having any impact with the bat.

No statistic sums up the Poms’ travails more than the fact that Pat Cummins — a bowler who bats at 9 — averages more than any English player in this series except for Dawid Malan.

Cummins has made 42, 44, 11* and 41 in his four digs, for an average of 46.

Meanwhile, Malan’s first innings 140 took his series average to 49.6.

The next closest Pom is Jonny Bairstow, who made 119 at the WACA and sits at 45.4 from his five digs.

Cook is the worst of the dedicated batsman, averaging 13.8 from his first five digs.

Three Aussies are averaging more than the top Englishman — Mitch Marsh with 181 (from one huge innings), Steve Smith 142, and Shaun Marsh 74.66.

The bowling figures tell just as stark a story, with Jake Ball (115) and Moeen Ali (105.33) both averaging over a hundred.

Woakes (51.57), Joe Root (56) and Stuart Broad (61) all average over 50, with only Jimmy Anderson (27.81, 11 wickets) under the 30 mark.

By contrast, Mitchell Starc averages 20, Josh Hazlewood 27.27, Nathan Lyon 26.91, and Cummins 30.88.
