South African cricket officials have come under fire for posing for a photo with fans openly taunting David Warner about his wife Candice.

Cricket South Africa commercial manager Clive Eksteen and head of media and communications Altaaf Khazi posed for a photo with three fans who were all wearing Sonny Bill Williams masks during the second Test.

It is a taunt to Warner's wife, Candice Warner, who had a public association with Williams 11 years ago.

Fairfax Media has reported the Australian camp is outraged at both the officials and CSA, who overturned a security decision to prevent the masks from coming into the ground.

Security had reportedly stopped fans with masks outside the venue before CSA intervened and let them in.

Other photographs have surfaced on social media showing fans wearing the mask at the ground.

Kazi told Fairfax Media the CSA's decision to let them in wasn't to taunt Warner and his family.

"Initially security wouldn't let them in...we found out because (the spectators) contacted us and we then went to security and got them in. They said 'let's take a photo with you guys'," he said.

"They're fans...they wanted to come with them. People come in dressed as all sorts of things. We let people in with Hashim Amla beards.

"We're very clear from a stadium perspective that we monitor the behaviour and language of fans."
