The Sheffield Shield clash between South Australia and New South Wales got underway at Adelaide Oval today, and the Redbacks had a tough time of it in the first dig.

No alarm bells rung early, with openers Johnathon Dalton and Jake Weatherald getting to 32 before the first wicket fell.

It all fell apart after that though, with the Redbacks crashing to 92 all out.

They lost all 10 wickets for 60 runs, including a spell where they lost 5/15 in under five overs.

Weatherald top scored with 30, while Callum Ferguson and Tom Cooper made ducks.

Former Test medium-pacer Trent Copeland did the damage for the Blues, finishing with 6/24 from his 13.3 overs.

Test quicks Mitch Starc and Pat Cummins also got two wickets apiece.

In response New South Wales are 2/27 after 11 overs, with Nic Maddinson and Steve Smith the departed batsmen.
