Aussie captain Steve Smith dropped a brutal sledge on England spinner Moeen Ali in his interview at the end of day 3 today.

Speaking to Channel 9 about his monster 229*, Smith said that the reason that he slowed his scoring late in the day was because the Poms started bowling alright — with a veiled dig at Moeen.

“They actually bowled ok at the back end there,” Smith said.

“I thought Dawid Malan was probably the pick of the spinners to be honest with you.

“He bowled really nicely there and he was hard to get away.”

The line about Malan being the best spinner on the day is a heavy sledge on Moeen, given Malan is there as a batsman and only bowled six overs for the day.

By contrast, Moeen is nominally the number one spinner and sent down 31 overs today for a return of 1/104.

To be fair, Smith would be the best judge of the English bowlers — he’s faced 818 balls so far in the series and shown no signs of slowing down.
