Australian skipper Steve Smith says Australia is ultimately after consistency and runs at number six.

The spot is perhaps Australia’s biggest talking point in terms of selection, with plenty of contenders to fill the role.

All-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Hilton Cartwright have filled the role in recent times, but the pair have averaged 37.00 and 27.50 respectively this year, with only one score above 50 - Maxwell’s 104 in Ranchi - between them.

Batsmen have averaged just 23.21 at number six with Smith as skipper, and he told Triple M’s Hot Breakfast it could be time for a dedicated batsman to fill the void.

“(I’d like) just some consistency, really,” he said.

“It’d be nice if someone could bowl, but in the end it’s about picking our best six batters.”

It could open the door for anyone out of the likes of Shaun Marsh, Travis Head, Nic Maddinson, Kurtis Patterson or Moises Henriques.

Smith believes Australia’s top four bowlers “pick themselves”, possibly ruling out the necessity

“I think our pace bowlers really pick themselves, we’ve got a good bunch there. Nathan Lyon’s bowling beautifully,” he told Triple M.

“I think someone that can be consistent and score some big runs at number six is really important."
