Australian skipper Steve Smith will miss the upcoming one-day tour of New Zealand with an ankle injury.

Smith revealed on Friday he will miss the three-match tour with an ankle ligament injury.

The 27-year-old has played every match in a busy summer, scoring 653 runs at an average of 72.55 across six Tests and 667 runs at an average of 55.58 across 14 ODIs.

It included scores of 164, 72 and 0 against New Zealand in December.

The first ODI of the upcoming Chappell-Hadlee series will be played on Monday, January 30.

Smith has said the injury is minor and should take less than two weeks to recover.

His next match for Australia will now be the first Test in India, starting on February 23.

With David Warner also rested form the tour after a busy schedule, it leaves the captaincy up for grabs, with Aaron Finch and Matthew Wade looming as contenders.

No official replacement has been named for Smith's captaincy as of yet.
