It has been confirmed that cricket will open the new Perth Stadium, with the fifth one day international between Australia and England to be played there on January 28th.

The Perth Scorchers will also play their Big Bash finals there if they host any, although regular season games will be played at the WACA.

The stadium seats 55,000 after seats are blocked out for sight screens, meaning a sell out would set a new record for sporting crowds in WA.

The current record is the 52,781 at the 1979 WAFL grand final, while the cricket record is 28,210 for a game between Australia and South Africa in 1993/94.

The match will come a week after the stadium runs an open day for the public, which has seen 110,000 tickets sold.

The match starts at 11.20am local time (2.20pm AEDT), meaning that the stadium won’t get the chance to show off the full range of its impressive LED lighting displays.
