It’s been a tough old Ashes series for England so far.

They were in it for a few days in Brisbane but capitulated to lose by 10 wickets and go 1-0 down.

The misery continued for them in Adelaide when Joe Root won the toss, chose to bowl and made no inroads whatsoever.

Australia just declared at 8/442, with a dominating 126* (231) to Shaun Marsh, and one moment just before the dinner break summed up England’s tour so far.

Marsh played a wild cross bat shot to a short ball, and popped up a simple catch for the slips cordon.

The only problem was that Alastair Cook and Mark Stoneman both went for it, smashed into each other, and the chance was gone.
