UPDATE:

Victoria have since been awarded a bonus point for the win.

EARLIER:

Victoria has won their final game of the JLT Cup domestic one day competition against New South Wales in bizarre circumstances, with a floodlight failure at North Sydney Oval forcing an early end to the game.

The Bushrangers were cruising at 4/108 chasing 144 after 26 overs when the umpires ruled the pitch was unsafe to play on.

Victoria were awarded the win on the Duckworth Lewis Stern Method which is normally used to find results in rain-affected games.

Post

Victoria’s win ends NSW’s campaign and puts them in the box seat to make the finals; going in to the game they needed to beat the Blues to make the top three.

The bonus point that the Vics were seemingly assured becomes a contentious issue however, if awarded it then it would make it effectively impossible for Tasmania to leapfrog them into third.

Cricket Australia has yet to make a ruling on the bonus point, which is awarded to a team that wins with 1.25 times the run rate of its opposition.

If awarded the bonus point, Victoria will be on 15 points with a significantly better net run rate than Tasmania.

If not, Tasmania can jump them with a bonus point win over Queensland.

It was 17-year-old Will Sutherland who did the damage for Victoria in the first innings, ripping out Ryan Gibson, Ed Cowan, Mitch Starc and Doug Bollinger on his way to the remarkable figures of 4/11 off 5.2 overs.

The Bushrangers lost early wickets in their modest chase, with Starc taking 3/35 off 8 overs and threatening to make the chase a tricky one.

However opener Matt Short kept a cool head, making 43 — the highest score in the match — before being lbw to Bollinger.

Seb Gotch (25*) and Blake Thomson (17*) were guiding the Vics to what looked like a certain win before the umpires called time on play.
