Will Sutherland is making his state debut for Victoria.

The 17-year-old has been called into the Victorian side to take on South Australia on Thursday, with injured veteran Cameron White missing with a rib injury.

The batting all-rounder has been named to bat at seven, becoming one of the youngest members of Australia's domestic tournament in recent memory.

Matt Short has been promoted to open in White's absence, while Sutherland's inclusion will fill a void in the middle order left by fellow youngster Will Pucovski, who has sustained yet another concussion.

Pucovski has a recent history of concussion and has been ruled out of Victoria's next two JLT Cup matches, but could feature in the finals should Victoria make it.

Sutherland has started his cricket season well, taking a wicket and making 55 with the bat in his first Premier Cricket game of the season last Saturday.

It all comes after the highly-talented youngster made the decision to pursue cricket over footy, after being touted as a top pick in this year's AFL draft.
