Women’s T20 cricket is in the running to included in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022, according to Adam Collins in the Guardian.

The ICC and ECB submitted a bid last week, and will seek an endorsement from the organising committee next Monday.

If that goes through, the Commonwealth Games Federation will make a call to be ratified by September 2019.

The submission has Edgbaston in Birmingham as the primary venue, with grounds surrounding cities like Leicester and and Worcester also set to host games.

“One of the things we have noticed is the more we have worked on this, the more passionate and committed people have become,” Clare Connor, director of England Women’s Cricket told the Guardian.

“People really tune into Olympic and Commonwealth Games, watching sports they normally wouldn’t watch and are inspired by them. So it would be a different audience from a typical cricket tournament. So the benefits for women’s cricket are very obvious.”

Cricket last featured at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, with South Africa beating Australia to the gold medal in a men’s only 50-over competition.
