Australian broadcasting legend Bruce McAvaney has given his tips for the Melbourne Cup tomorrow.

Appearing on Triple M's The Rush Hour With Jars And Louie in Adelaide, Bruce — famously a keen punter — named his favourite horse for tomorrow’s race that stops a nation.

“The one I’m picking is number five, Marmelo,” he said.

“Now Marmelo’s an English horse that’s done most of his racing in France.

“He won a very important race in France before he came to Australia, a race that’s been won by other Melbourne Cup winners.

“He had one run in this country and he ran in the Caulfield Cup, he got a long way back and he flashed home.

“[He just has] the Melbourne Cup written all over him.

“He’s got a great Australian jockey, he’s got Winx’s jockey Hughie Bowman, who hasn’t won a Melbourne Cup, but he’s certainly good enough.”

Bruce had a few more horses he has his eye on though.

“My number two pick is number three Humidor,” he said.

“Humidor’s the horse that gave Winx a big fright in the Cox Plate.

“Blake Shinn’s won a Melbourne Cup… and the third one I’m going is number 20, Wall Of Fire.

“Now Wall Of Fire’s ridden by Craig Williams who’s won everything in Australia except the Melbourne Cup… I loved the run in the Herbert Power Stakes.

“This race was the week before the Caulfield Cup, he flashed home and ran second.

“Two of the last three Melbourne Cup winners have actually run in this race, so I think it’s a good form guide.

“So my numbers are five, three and 20.”
