Legendary sport commentator Bruce McAvaney says that the great Winx is the best horse he’s ever seen.
Speaking on Triple M’s Rocking Horses this morning, McAvaney said that if Winx can pull off her third straight Cox Plate win today she’ll be up there with the best ever.
“I said a little spontaneously during the week I wouldn’t back Phar Lap to beat her, and what I meant by that is I think she (Winx) is the equal of him,” McAvaney said.
“Since then I’ve had a good think about it because you say these things and you’ve gotta back them up… honestly when you write her page down, the one thing that’s missing is maybe a Melbourne Cup and that won’t happen, but the thing about her is that she’s won from 1100 to 2200 (metres).
“So the range is sort of there — I feel she’d get much further if she had to, she doesn’t pull — she’s been knocked over numerous times and won, she’s looked in a losing position and won, she’s beaten great horses by big margins and she’s won on heavy 10s and good threes and won on every track.
“Honestly I don’t think we know what we’ve got here. I don’t think there’s been a better race horse ever in this country.
“She has to ice it today, and I don’t say that lightly because I’m Phar Lap’s biggest fan.
“I grew up believing Tulloch was the next Phar Lap, I know Kingston Town well, and then I’ve seen Black Caviar and horses like Makybe Diva… I think she (Winx) might be as good as anything we’ve ever seen.”
