Gai Waterhouse has discussed how she felt watching Winx equal Kingston Town’s three straight Cox Plate wins last weekend.

Waterhouse’s father, TJ Smith, trained Kingston Town throughout the legendary horse’s entire career, and famously took him to three consecutive Cox Plates in 1980-82.

Waterhouse said it wasn’t bittersweet at all last weekend watching Winx equal that achievement.

“I just think it’s the greatness of Winx,” she said.

“And it isn’t lovely to see a good horse win?

“It took 34 years to break Kingston Town’s record so it’s not something easily done… they called him the King and he was very well named.

“As I said, it’s taken all that time to break his record, he was just a remarkable horse.

“But so is Winx, she’s a remarkable horse, and aren’t we lucky to witness these horses?”

Chatham and Rising Fast also won the Cox Plate three times in a row.

Gai Waterhouse’s favourite horse of her own today is Global Glamour, which is number 2 in race 6.
