Jockey Craig Williams has spoken about the doping allegations surrounding horse racing in Australia.

The Herald Sun obtained text messages suggesting that trainers have been using performance-enhancing sodium bicarbonate for years, with races as big as the Melbourne Cup implicated.

Speaking to Dead Set Legends Melbourne with Jay Clark, Leigh Montagna and Billy Brownless today, Williams said it was a terrible look for the sport.

“For me, being a participant, it’s always bad because when you get a story in any industry or sport, everyone seems to be tarnished with the same brush.” Williams said.

“Of course that’s not the case. The disappointment I have is the fact that it was released because it just means that racing’s going to be in the papers anyway for the wrong reasons from my perspective… for that to get leaked and taken out, obviously it’s not that great.

“I think there’s things to work out… I was still brought up on the premise that you are guilty until proven innocent, so at least let it run its course.

“But obviously the allegations are very damning and of course it affects racing and people that partake in it.”
