TAB’s Nick Quinn has explained why he thinks the Cox Plate is a better race day than the Melbourne Cup on Triple M’s Rocking Horses this morning.

He said that the Cox Plate is a more pure race because it’s not subject to the same handicaps as the Melbourne Cup.

“The Melbourne Cup’s a handicap, so the idea is the best horse carries the most weight, and then you get horses down in the weight to make it a level playing field,” Quinn said.

“The Cox Plate is a weight-for-age race so it is the best of the best.

“It is the equivalent of the grand final in the AFL but they come from all over the world.”

Quinny said the length of the race is a good mix of distance and pace.

“It’s a perfect distance because you’ve gotta be fast to run over the Cox Plate, but you’ve also gotta have a bit of stamina as well because of the 2040 metre distance.

“It’s a taxing race and it’s always run at a genuine speed, it’s the survival of the fittest.”

Legendary mare Winx is looking for her third straight Cox Plate win today, and Triple M will have the call live on 105.1 at 5pm.
