Rekindling has won the 2017 Melbourne Cup.

Ridden by Corey Brown, Rekindling beat out Johannes Vermeer in a tight finish to take it home, with Max Dynamite finishing third.

The horse, remarkably, was trained by 24-year-old Joseph O'Brien.

"I can't believe it," he said.

"His preparation went really good. Corey gave him an unbelievable ride. For everyone and the lads at home and the lads here have done an unbelievable job.

"All the lads at home, all year round, have done a great job with him. I can't quite believe it. This is unbelievable. It hasn't sunk in yet."

It makes Lloyd Williams a six-time Melbourne Cup-winning owner.

"It's a dream for me, absolute dream," he said after the race.

"It is terribly exciting. I can't put it into words to be perfectly honest."

Brown couldn't contain his excitement.

"I have been back here from overseas about nine months and slowly and surely getting back to where I was," he said.

"Mate, again I can't believe it."
