Picking a winner on the horses is hard enough. But with 24 horses over 3,200m the Melbourne Cup is probably the hardest race in the world to pick.

Here are some stats that could help you though.

  •  Just one favourite has won in the past 11 years (Fiorente at $7 in 2013)
  •  Barrier five is the most successful barrier in Melbourne Cup history with eight wins
  •  Six-year-olds have won four of the past seven Melbourne Cup’s
  •  Horses starting with the letter T have won 16 times – the most successful in Cup history
  •  The last time a horse (Vintage Crop) won the Cup without having previously run in Australia was in 1993
  •  Makybe Diva was the last mare to win the race in 2005
