Trainer Wayne Hawkes says that Chautauqua is the ‘Dustin Martin of horses’ ahead of his run in $10 million The Tab Everest Sydney today.

Chautauqua is well known for being a mercurial horse, coming home with booming finishes to win races he had absolutely no right to.

He created history in April when he famously came from last to win a third consecutive TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick.

Speaking on Triple M’s new show Rocking Horses with Billy Brownless, Nick Quinn and Adam Hamilton, Hawkes says that the seven-year-old is such a box office hit that punters tell him they can’t help barracking for Chautauqua even when they’ve backed against him.

“He certainly comes from a no-win position and at some stage in the race you’ve either backed him and you’re thinking ‘I’ve done my money’ or you’re betting against him going ‘beautiful, I’ve got him covered’,” Hawkes - who co-trains Chautauqua with his dad John and brother Michael - said.

“Even people that don’t back Chautauqua come up to me after the race and say ‘geeze you’re a bugger, I backed the opposition but I was cheering for you, go figure!’

“So to get people to actually say that talking from their pocket, when they lose to be cheering him home… racing needs these superstars.

“He’s the Dustin Martin of the horse world, there’s no doubt about it.”

Chautauqua is one of a strong field of 12 in the $10 million The Tab Everest at Randwick this afternoon.

He’s second favourite to She Will Reign for 1200 metre race, which is race eight on the card and jumps at 4:15 AEDT.
