It's been described as one of the "most horrific crashes" ever seen in motorsport.

17 year old Englishman Billy Monger's car collided with another during a race of the British F4 series at Donington Park on Sunday.

The teenager was finally freed after being trapped in his car for an hour and a half before being airlifted to hospital in Nottingham.

Amazingly the driver in the other car walked away unscathed.

The news wasn't so good for Monger however who was left fighting for life.

“Due to the injuries sustained and despite every effort, Billy has sadly had both lower legs amputated,” said a statement from British F4 officials.

He's being kept in an induced coma to ensure his best chances of a full recovery.

Monger's family are also looking for donations to help cover his treatment and therapy bill.

This morning they'd raised more than $540,000.

Donations can be made here.
