It was back to the track for Formula 1 teams in Spain overnight with a surprise name topping the time sheets on the opening day of the second pre-season test.

The freshly un-retired Felipe Massa set the fastest time for Williams around the Barcelona circuit.

The Brazilian helped the team make up for lost time after a heavy crash by team-mate Lance Stroll last week saw them miss an entire day of preparations.

The Mercedes engine in the back of the Williams is nearly identical to the one that powers Lewis Hamilton and Valterri Bottas who led the way in the first test.

Daniel Ricciardo showed Red Bull have the speed to compete at the front, recording the 2nd fastest lap time of the day.

“In terms of where we were last week I feel like the car is starting to come alive more,” said Ricciardo.

“We definitely feel we can still get more out of the car, I think everyone can, but it’s looking alright.”

Ferrari continues to show glimmers of blistering pace with Sebastian Vettel more than half a second quicker than Hamilton on the softer tyres.

That was during a massive 168 lap stint without any reliability issues.

Further down pit lane McLaren's rocky preparations rolled on with the team forced to make another engine change.

The reworked Honda unit's been plagued with issues since being unwrapped last week.
