Ferrari Return?

2017's already turning out to be a stinker for Fernando Alonso.

Regarded by his peers as one of the finest - and fastest - drivers on the Formula 1 grid, the Spanish star has (almost) had enough.

With his McLaren contract up at the end of the year, he's declared he'll leave the team unless they can rediscover Championship-winning form.

He's made it crystal clear he's here to win.

"I like this Formula 1 and my intention and first priority next year is to race in Formula 1," Alonso said.

"But not only to race but also to win.

"I am happy with McLaren but we are not winning. If, before September or October, l see a possibility that we are in a position to win in 2018, l will be more than happy to stay with the team.

"If that is not the case, l will be more than happy to talk to anyone."

By anyone, that could mean Ferrari where Kimi Raikkonen could be wrenched from his seat when his own contract expires at the end of the season.

But would Sebastian Vettel welcome Fernando at the Scuderia?

"I am ready to race whoever comes along," said the German.

"But l am very happy with how we are set up now."

Another of Alonso's former teams, Renault, have also been linked to the two-time champion.

It might sound drastic, but dropping Honda could be another option for McLaren with this year's engine looking more and more like a dud with every round.

But that won't be cheap.

And Fernando is keeping the faith.

"With this project everyone is putting a lot of energy and commitment.

"The technical staff we have in the team now is at the top level and we have some of the best guys from all the teams."

The podium might be out of reach, but you can count on Alonso pushing hard for a respectable finish at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.
