Fernando Alonso is a man on a mission.

The two-time Formula 1 champ has walked away from the most prestigious championship in the world - albeit for one round (and to be fair a dog of a car) at Monaco - to try his hand at Indycar.

And it's not just any old round we're talking about.

It's the Indianapolis 500.

Yep, Indy.

From the moment he got behind the wheel of the McLaren Honda, rivals knew he was going to be quick.

And he's backed that up by qualifying on the second row at Indianapolis.

Decided by the average speed over four laps - Alonso very nearly snagged pole position.

That was until he lost some time out of Turn Four of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which meant he had to settle for fifth on the grid next weekend.

"I had an overboost problem in lap two out of the last corner, and it was like hitting the brakes. I nearly came to the pit lane because this qualifying run is over with this problem."

If it weren't for that, Fernando probably wouldn't have got pole anyway.

Scott Dixon put up the fastest pole time for an Indy 500 in 21 years.

Check out the lap below.

The 101st Indy 500 will race next Sunday in the U.S. (early Monday morning in Australia).
