The jaw-clenching moment a Ferrari mechanic's leg snapped during a pit stop gone wrong has been caught on camera.

The mechanic, known only as Francesco, was working on Kimi Raikkonen's car at the Bahrain Grand Prix as he came in for a tire change.

According to reports, Raikkonen had been given the green light to go but the back left tyre had not been secured properly and, as the Formula One drive pulled away, he hit the mechanic.

Video footage shows the exact moment Francesco's leg was pulled under the wheel, twisting and buckling under the pressure.

Ferrari has since confirmed that the poor bloke has likely sustained a "shinbone and fibula fracture", with the company's chairman Sergio Marchionne releasing a statement wishing him "a speedy recovery".

"[We] hope to see him back on the track soon," Marchionne added.

Raikkonen's car came to a halt just a few metres away, with the Finnish driver caught throwing his steering wheel into the cockpit and later swiping a bottle of water as he walked back through the team garage.

"I don't see what happens," he said after the race. "My job is to go when the light is green."

The Ferrari team had also been fined $6,140 for an unsafe pit release during practice less than 48 hours earlier.
