Renault is the latest team to unveil a concept design for the future.

The RS2027 Vision shown off at the Shanghai Auto Show is all about the drivers, electric technology, performance and improved safety.

The radical design features a closed cockpit, a chunky but simple front wing, a smaller rear spoiler, moveable aero and smooth sculpted bodywork.

So why now?

The car has been designed to celebrate 40 years of the French carmaker's involvement in F1.

Other stuff less obvious to the eyes are LED lighting on the wheels which show off lap times and positions.

There are also systems linked to social media which allows fans to determine which drivers get power boosts.

Safety's a big deal with a cockpit canopy which can be activated in case of an accident or safety car scenario.

But it's the nitty gritty stuff underneath which delivers just as much 'wow' factor.

The RS2027 is four wheel drive and uses high density batteries and a full-electric mode for pitlane runs.

It boasts an mouthwatering 1 megawatt of power (1341 bhp) and a Kinetic Recovery System set to 500kW - compared to 120kW on the current cars.

While some of this stuff might be considered too wacky to make it to the track, Renault's vision of the future offers an intriguing picture of the sport's future racing forward.
