MotoGP legend Nicky Hayden has died five days after being hit by a car while training on his bicycle in Italy.

The American had been in Italy for a race at the nearby Imola circuit when he suffered severe brain injuries.

He'd been in intensive care since Wednesday.

"We would like everyone to remember Nicky at his happiest - riding a motorcycle," his brother Tommy said.

Dubbed the 'Kentucky Kid', Hayden won the MotoGP title in 2006, ending a Valentino Rossi winning streak.

He won 3 races during his career from 2003-16 with Honda and Ducati and finished on the podium 28 times in 218 races.

Nicky finished 5th when he switched to the World Superbike Championship last year.

His death triggered an outpouring of grief from fellow riders and fans on social media.
