Shiny, Bright, But Are They Fast?

It's car launch season in Formula 1.

And while they used to be showy affairs with huge parties, these days teams are more content to slip some photos into your inbox.

Ho hum.

We're relieved to tell you the machinery is no less sexy, however.

Renault have given us a look at the R.S. 18 as the French manufacturer eyes a strong run back towards the front of the grid.

It's been a while since a young Spaniard by the name of Fernando Alonso won consecutive championships in the mid-2000s.

But this might be the car that revives those sorts of memories in the hands of German Nico Hulkenberg and another Spanish driver who's drawn comparisons with Alonso, Carlos Sainz.

It's still yellow, but with much more black this year.

Also revealed was the new Sauber.

The backmarkers have been boosted by support from Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo, a sister brand to engine suppliers Ferrari.

With "shark fins" and T-wings banned for 2018, smaller winglets and barge boards appear to be where much of the aerodynamic race will take shape.

Swede Marcus Ericsson will once again suit up for the Swiss team, joined by highly-rated Ferrari protege Charles Leclerc.

With any luck, some extra pace from the newer Ferrari power plant should mean Sauber's midfield rivals will be seeing a lot more of this... (the rear).
