Alex Johnston Set To Continue Bittersweet Souths Legacy

While Souths are spending time at the wrong end of the ladder, point-scoring machine Alex Johnston has still managed to find himself leading the try charts with 17 so far this season.

He's now sharing the title with the Storm's Suliasi Vunivalu after the Melbourne flyer had another big weekend.

It's the fourth consecutive year Johnston has been Souths' lead try scorer since making his debut for the club in 2014.

"I'm not really going to focus (on it) too much," Johnston said, reports AAP.

"I just want to play some good footy and if I happen to be up there by the end of the season it will be pretty good for me.

"I'm trying to score each week, but I think that's just the by-product of playing some good footy."

Oddly enough, this isn't the first time Souths have managed to dominate the try-scoring charts despite having a very average season on the ladder.

Nathan Merritt was the league's top try scorer in 2006 and 2011, despite Souths finishing with the wooden spoon in 2006 and in 10th spot in 2011.
