Peter Wallace has forced his way into Penrith's squad to play Gold Coast in Saturday's NRL clash at Pepper Stadium, with Mitch Rein the unlucky player to miss out.

Coach Anthony Griffin described Rein's scratching from the squad as a "tough call" given his recent performances but backed the experienced Wallace to perform in his comeback from a groin tear.

The clash shapes as crucial for both sides, who sit outside the top eight but within striking distance of finals if they continue their winning ways.

Wallace will reunite with captain Matt Moylan, who will also make his comeback from injury, and in-form halfback Nathan Cleary.

The hooker was tipped to return to the Origin arena before tearing his groin in May.

"He (Rein) did a fantastic job the last few weeks, it's a tough call," Griffin said.

"But Pete was really close (to a return) last week, he's done a good job getting himself ready to go ... he'll do a good job for us no doubt."

Cleary scored 22 points in the Panthers' round 19 win, but Griffin said the return of Wallace and Moylan would not cramp his style.

"No, it's good to have Matt back and Nathan ran the team really well last week and Matt will add to that," Griffin said.

"Last week was a good opportunity to take more responsibility and that will only add to his performance no matter if Matt's there or not."

Both teams will place their trust in young playmakers, with Cleary and Titan Ashley Taylor in sensational form.

"I watched the game last week really closely and they've got a really good side; experience, size off the bench and class there with Taylor and (Jarryd) Hayne," Griffin said of the Gold Coast.

"They are a very good team the Titans. They've had their troubles during the year with injuries and that's probably the only thing that's been holding them back."
