Bevan French was distraught after injury compiled with the Eels semi-final loss to the Cowboys ended his 2017 season.

A hamstring injury in Round 24 against the Titans would result in French not appearing in the Blue and Gold again in 2017, which was extremely tough to take.

"We worked so hard as a squad all year, it was heartbreaking to cop that (injury) news but then go out that week ... it was pretty hard to take," French told NRL.com.

"No one wants to end the season that way, not playing on the field, it would be heartbreaking losing on the field but it hurts a little more when you're off the field injured."

Now fully fit and recovered, French is set to use the heartbreak from last year as motivation heading into season 2018.

"It makes me more hungry for the season now, just like everyone else, especially after losing a semi-final game," French added.

With the arrival of Jarryd Hayne and return of Clint Gutherson form injury, French is set take his place on the wing of a formidable Eels backline.

Eels backline in 2018:

1. Clint Gutherson

2. Josh Hoffman

3. Michael Jennings

4. Jarryd Hayne

5. Bevan French
