Billy Slater has become the first losing player to be awarded the Wally Lewis Medal for Man of the Series.

The fullback, who has officially played his last game of representative footy, seemed shocked when he was called back to the microphone after the Maroons 18-12 win.

It's the second time Slater has been awarded player of the series - despite only playing two games this year - and the first time a member of the losing side has won.

The surprise announcement came after Slater had an emotional moment with his wife and kids, who joined him on the pitch to celebrate his final game in the Maroons jersey.
