Billy Slater has announced his retirement from representative footy, effective from the end of this Origin series.

The Maroons fullback - who will pull on the No. 1 jersey for the 30th time on June 6 - made the announcement at Queensland's open media call on Tuesday morning.

While he hasn't ruled out playing on in the NRL next year, Slater did take the opportunity to thank his family, coaches and teammates for his time playing for the Maroons and for Australia.

"My family - obviously a lot of support and unconditional support has been there with my family, my wife Nicole and my two kids," he said

"My dad instilled that rugby league passion in me when I was a boy.

"I would like to thank the Queensland public, the Innisfail people, they've always made me feel pretty special playing in the Maroons jersey."
