The Wests Tigers have announced that premiership-winning former fullback Brett Hodgson will rejoin the club as an NRL assistant coach.

Hodgson, who is currently assistant coach at Widnes in the Super League, has signed to return to Australia for the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

The 39-year-old is excited by the challenge of helping to lift the battling Wests Tigers from the lower end of the ladder.

"I'm extremely happy to be returning to Wests Tigers... and I'm looking forward to getting started," said Hodgson in a statement.

"I feel now is the perfect time to return as the club enters this new era."

Hodgson joined the Wests Tigers in 2004 and played 102 NRL games, including being a part of the club's 2005 premiership-winning team.

Hodgson also made six State of Origin appearances for NSW and played in the Super League for Huddersfield and Warrington before retiring at the end of 2013.
