Brisbane are reeling from news that bench forward Tevita Pangai Junior could be sidelined for up to three months with a finger injury - nine weeks longer than they expected.

Scans have revealed that the finger Pangai Junior damaged in the Broncos' last round NRL win over Gold Coast Titans has suffered structural damage and will require surgery.

Pangai Jnr will go under the knife on Wednesday to repair an unstable break and tendon damage.

"It is the tendon damage that is the real concern," a Broncos statement read.

Pangai Jnr could return to the field in two months, depending on the extent of the tendon damage.

"After that tendon repair it could be anywhere from eight to 12 weeks before Pangai can take the field again," the Broncos statement added.

"The level of damage to the tendon, which cannot always be seen on scans, will determine what the actual time period for his recovery is."
