Cameron Smith has confirmed that we've seen the last of him on the representative level, announcing his retirement from Origin and Australian rep duties, effective immediately.

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, Smith said the decision stemmed from his struggle to back up after Origin games last year, saying that he felt the physical and mental strain.

"I would have loved to have played on for a lot longer," Smith said.

"I am one of the lucky ones, I got to fulfil my dreams.

"Thanks to the fans, it has been a pleasure playing in front of you."

Queensland coach Kevin Walters has lauded Smith's performance both on and off the field.

"Cameron has been a great player, but he has been a great person for the game," Walters said.

Smith retires as the most capped player in Origin history.
