Tonga's World Cup dream run has ended in controversy going down to England 20-18 in Auckland.

Down 20-6 with only 8 minutes remaining, Tonga almost staged one of the greatest comebacks in world sport, scoring twice to get to within two points of England with only three minutes left on the clock.

Benji Marshall believes Tonga have every right to be angry that it wasn't sent to the video-referee.

"Fifita has every right to be filthy. That was a one-on-one strip," Marshall said on Channel 7.

Laurie Daley agreed with Marshall's sentiments.

"He had to check it, he had to go upstairs," Daley said.

Social media was divided over the moment that ultimately ended Tonga's campaign.
