NSWRL Chairman George Peponis hasn't ruled out the possibility of NSW's home Origin game being played overseas during the Sydney stadium rebuild.

"Are we ready to go overseas yet? I'm not sure," Peponis told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"They tried that about 25 years ago in Los Angeles and they didn't get that many people then.

"But, considering in eight years' time there will be a World Cup in USA and Canada, as either a prelude to that or after that, it would seem an opportune time to take State of Origin over there."

With both Allianz and ANZ Stadiums out of action for at least a 12 month period, the Blues will need to find a new home - much like the NRL Grand Final in 2020 which is headed to the SCG - is also an option for Origin.

"Parramatta will probably not be big enough, so (the SCG is an option), we'll have to look at that," Peponis said.

"I played three grand finals on the SCG so I'd love to go back there. I love the ground, there are lots of fond memories for me and probably lots of other people as well.

"There would be some nostalgia."

NSW are only scheduled to host one game during the 2020 Origin series.
