The Cowboys have released a statement on Johnathan Thurston after the star halfback picked up a shoulder injury in Friday night's ANZAC test.

The club has hosed down fears suggesting he could be gone for the season. But the severity of the injury remains largely unclear.

“The injury does not require surgery, and it is not season-ending. Thurston will continue to be monitored and treated by the club’s medical team and High Performance Unit,” said the Cowboys.

“The Club will be making no further comment at this stage.”

It’s believed Thurston will miss the Origin opener on May 31.
