With Des Hasler under scrutiny following a turbulent season for the Bulldogs, tonight's loss to the Panthers has done little to ease the minds of fans.

The 16 - 8 loss at Pepper Stadium seemingly rules the Bulldogs out of contention for a finals spot, and it's the first time they've missed out on September footy since Des Hasler joined the club.

For Hasler, he hasn't skipped a finals series since 2004.

The Bulldogs have also managed just 14 points or less this season, which is their lowest average since 1989.

Canterbury have also managed just 260 points in 2017, with Nathan Cleary alone scoring 168 - which is two-thirds of what the Bulldogs have.

Speaking to the Triple M call team post-match, Josh Reynolds was devastated to be out of the run for a finals spot.

"That's probably the worst thing you could say to me," Reynolds said.

"After such a good time I've had at this club, not to play in the semis in my last year is very sad.

"It's tough playing footy when it sucks."
