It was only a few weeks ago Paul 'Fatty' Vautin's media future was up in the air after the footy show was axed from programming.

Fatty was told he would spend the last year of his Channel 9 contract in the commentary box, before seemingly riding into the sunset.

However, it seems Nine have backflipped with the network's director of sport Tom Malone telling The Sunday Telegraph, Fatty still has a long and bright future with the network.

“We love Fatty,” Malone said, “The Footy Show was a budget decision. We had to halve it.

“It had nothing to do with personalities.

“I rate Fatty very highly as a commentator and I’d like to think we could talk about an extension when the timing’s right.

"He’s still got a lot to offer the network.”

The Footy Show was axed after poor ratings plagued the show for years, with Nine to introduce two new shows.

A Thursday night 'preview' show hosted by Erin Molan and a Monday night weekend review show hosted by James Bracey.
