Former Parramatta Eels manager Jason Irvine has appeared in court over the NRL club's salary cap scandal.

The 42-year-old appeared in Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday facing a charge he knowingly dealt with the proceeds of crime to the amount of $72,000 between December 2014 and May 2015.

A second charge alleges Irvine used false invoices and a fake sponsorship agreement to deceptively obtain $17,490 from the Parramatta Leagues Club.

The Eels were stripped of 12 competition points and fined $1 milllion last year after they were found guilty by the NRL of cheating the salary cap.

In an NRL investigation, the Eels were found guilty of funnelling money to players through inflated invoices and dodgy third-party payments, circumventing salary cap rules.

Irvine, who has been granted bail, became the first person charged by police over the scandal following his arrest at Leichhardt on Monday.

He also faces a charge of acting with intent to pervert the course of justice in relation to a traffic infringement.

The matter has been adjourned until April 4.
