Billy Slater has confirmed his NRL retirement this afternoon, announcing that he will officially hang up the boots at season's end.

Speaking to the media, the 35-year-old thanked his fellow players - giving a special mention to Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk.

"For 16 years I've had the pleasure of playing in the NRL, however this will be my last as I will be retiring at season's end," he said.

"I am proud to have helped in the development of this club to become one of the most powerful sporting organisations in Australia.

"To the fans of rugby league: thanks for creating all the atmosphere at the games each week.

"It's been a pleasure to entertain you all."

An emotional Billy thanked his family for their support "for all of [his] football life".

"Ever since I can remember, I have loved this game."

Slater made his debut for Melbourne Storm in 2003.

He has 313 games to his name at the time of writing, with a whopping 187 tries scored.

He's also played 31 games for the QLD Maroons and scored 12 tries in his Origin career.

Other accolades include 30 games for Australia, Dally M fullback of the year (2008, 2011), Golden Boot Award (2008), and the Clive Churchill Medal (2009, 2017).
